Letting the Play Develop

letting the play develop

Today I want to discuss with you the topic of allowing the play to develop. So here in the US, we’re in the middle of football playoff season, the college football bowl season. And so anyone who’s a fan of American football understands the importance of letting the play develop. So when you watch the offense, a good running back, won’t always take off running towards the line. Often they will allow the play to develop for a second or two and then they’ll take off because the opening begins to develop.

Well, the same is true when you’re dealing with your business. Sometimes we’re in such a hurry to get a product to market or to start making that we try to force things without really allowing the play to develop. We don’t make sure that all of the moving pieces are in place. We don’t make sure that we fine tuned our product or our service offering so that it has the massive maximum impact within our prospect market because we’re just overly anxious to get that result.

What I want to put in front of you today though is be willing to let the play develop, be willing to be patient so that the right pieces are in place. What I say often is that it’s not generally the how or the what. It’s who? Normally what you’re looking for is, who is that strategic person that needs to be a part of this process? Whether they be a business partner, whether they be a consultant, whether they be somebody who provides a service to you, but we need to let all of those pieces be in place so that when we move forward, we move forward effectively and efficiently.

For the last two years, I’ve been part of a team for a product that we’re hoping to launch here in the next 30 to 60 days. Now, the reality is we’ve set launch targets for the past nine months and as we’ve gone back in and we’ve looked at the overall product, as we’ve looked at things we want to roll out, we realize there’s a little fine tuning we need to do. In fact, I just got off a call, we were looking at some initial test numbers we had done in December, and we’re discussing what are the adjustments that need to be made so that the play can fully develop when we go live.

So just a few thoughts for you today. I hope you find those helpful. Of course, as always, I come from a based perspective. So if you want that, the Book of Habakkuk is all about writing down the vision and then being patient, waiting for what has been written down to take place. Anyway, hope you have a great day today. I’ll talk to you again soon.
