Important Points for Running a Business from Home

Carl WillisNo Comments

working from homeRunning a business from home is no doubt a lot of work, and it can be super hectic sometimes. It’s tough to separate your home life from your work life.

Your kids want you, your spouse wants you, and most of all you have deadlines on the brain. You may be feeling as though you can’t get everything done, and you may even feel as though no one respects your work. (Yes, everyone will ask you when you’re getting a for real job!)

How do you combat all of this to get to where you need to be?

Today, I’m going to tell you all about what it takes to start running a business from home, and how you can rise above the chaos to get things done.

Things to Consider Before Running a Business from Home

Being an entrepreneur isn’t for everyone.

You may feel that you need structure, or maybe you just feel confident that you can make what you want because your chances of earning what you’re worth are much higher when it’s all up to you.

Here are some considerations you should make when running a business from home.

  1. What is your type? You have a unique personality, and the question is whether or not working from home is right for you. Do you need structure? Do you need someone to tell you what to do and when? If you do, then it may be best for you to keep your job. It’s okay to admit that you need that. It could mean financial disaster if you don’t.
  2. Patience and persistence are key. Instant gratification doesn’t fit into what it means to have a home based business. In fact, you should know that patience is really the key to growing your business with a solid foundation. Success doesn’t happen overnight, so you’ll want to keep pushing hard in the beginning. Once you get your first sale, keep pushing. Don’t take a moment to rest and get too laid back until you hit paydirt. Once you do, you can focus on ways to automate your business.
  3. Make a plan and follow it. Planning is essential to life. If you fail to plan you plan to fail. It’s that simple. Make a plan for your business and then stick to it. What do you want it to be? How do you get there?
  4. Discipline wins the day. One of the most important points about running a business from home is discipline. Getting up early to get things done is important. You’ll have to get up before others do and plan and organize before your house starts their day. It’s not always easy to wake up early, but if you can start by getting up 15 minutes earlier, and then adjusting your time earlier and earlier, you’ll discover that it’s the only way to get things done.
  5. Make a list and check it twice! Making a checklist of items you need to get done is vital to your day. It’s all about prioritizing your “to do” list. Can you make a list and check it twice? Make sure that what you need to complete by end of the day is done first.
  6. Keep a schedule. When you first get started, you’ll most likely work more than you ever imagined. In fact, you might drink more coffee than you can stand. Ha! However, when you have a family, you need to make sure that they are a priority in your life. This means that you need to keep office hours so that you can take advantage of the flexibility you have with your home based business.
  7. Prepare to multi-task. There is no way to predict the day, and if you don’t learn to multi-task you’ll never be able to manage a business. Always put your family first and work second. You’ll be so glad you did!
  8. Organize your social media time. This goes hand in hand with keeping a schedule, and it’s super important. You need to build an online following, and it’s important that you focus on social media. However, keep in mind that you don’t need to be on those accounts all of the time. Research when your target audience is on Facebook and when they are on Twitter. Then you can plan your posts around those times. When you log back in you’ll be able to find out what’s new!

A home based business is a treasure, and it can give you the FREEDOM that you desire. You can be more flexible and you can have more time with your family and time to travel.

Just keep in mind that “running a business from home” is exciting, but it’s still a lot of work!

How to Avoid Work from Home Scams

Carl WillisNo Comments

work from home scamsIf you’ve been investigating home business opportunities, you’ve most likely researched how to avoid work from home scams.

Sometimes it’s hard to cut through the noise when there are so many businesses out there being promoted.

If it isn’t about AdvoCare, you’ll see a post about Younique, or Jeunesse Global, or maybe someone else. There are tons of great companies out there.

The biggest challenge?

There are also tons of scams. The MLM industry has gotten a bad rap for years, oftentimes being referred to as a pyramid scheme.

While that debate still comes up amongst folks from time to time, it’s important to remember that the MLM industry isn’t the ONLY home business opportunity.

There are tons of affiliate marketing programs out there too.

How can you differentiate between what is a scam and what is a real home business opportunity?

Today, I’ll give you some tips on what to look for if you want to build a home based business, and how you can avoid the scams that many have fallen prey to.

Tips to Help You Identify Work from Home Scams

While there are plenty of home business opportunities, you are also aware there are plenty of scams that are hurting innocent people.

Here are some quick tips to help you easily identify these work from home scams.

  1. Research the company and their location. It’s always smart to research the company you are thinking about signing up with or promoting before you sign that dotted line. It sounds cliché, but it’s the truth. Never consider putting your signature on something if you don’t know who you’re dealing with. Look up information for their corporate office, call and ask them who they are, where they are located, and always check to see if they are registered with the Direct Selling Association. (Only check the DSA if you are researching a company that specifies it is direct sales. If you face any opposition from the person on the other end of the line, ask questions and be cautious .Just let them know why you called.
  2. Research the leadership. Do you know who the leaders are? There are many companies that have closed their doors and reopened under new names. This isn’t really all that uncommon, especially if they chose to go in another direction. Startups are difficult, especially when it comes to MLM/Direct Sales. If you find that someone in question keeps starting companies and they die out, beware. This doesn’t mean that they are bad people, but just know that your investment may not go as far as you would like for a viable home business.
  3. Don’t fall for opportunities that really are not opportunities. The biggest challenge with finding a home business opportunity is that many of them attract those who want a quick fix or something that is manageable while being at home with the kids. Many stay-at-home-moms are looking for something that they think they can manage in just a few hours per day. This isn’t easy at all, and therefore it’s tough when opportunities are posted that are listed as “administrative”. Stuffing envelopes is still around, but that isn’t going to feed your family. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably isn’t TRUE. As a hard-working stay-at-home-mom, you deserve more. Focus on opportunities that provide training, community, and most of all support.
  4. Don’t give out your personal information upfront. There are some work from home scams that you’ll come across on landing pages. These pages don’t have enough information in my opinion, and they talk about “affiliate opportunities” to promote their products and services. Affiliate marketing is a great way to work from home, but not all opportunities are on the up and up. Verify the information the same way you would with a direct sales company. Make some phone calls and do the research before you make a decision. If you want to start a home business, it requires work upfront, and work each day to make it grow.

What else should you know?

Avoid Work from Home Scams by Being Realistic

The word business alone, means that it takes work. Don’t believe that it doesn’t take your time and energy every single day for you to take action to see it through.

If you sign your name and put forth a financial investment make sure that you give it your time and effort daily.

Focus on building an online presence using social media, as well as blogging and other resources so that people can learn more about you.

Seek out coaching and training from other successful people so that you can learn new skills that can help you grow your business.

If it sounds easy, it’s most likely one of the many “work from home scams”.

Online Jobs From Home Or Your Own Business – Which Is Better?

online jobs from homeOnline Jobs From Home Or Your Own Business – Which Is Better?

Maybe you are searching for online jobs from home, because you want to avoid the commute, spend more time with your kids or just simply hate sitting in a cubicle or office all day.   As more and more companies have turned to telecommuting as a viable work option, the desire of people to break out of the traditional work environment has increased significantly.

At the same time, many people have fled the corporate rat race to become home based entrepreneurs.  Their initial reasons for making the change are often very similar to those who actively seek out online jobs from home; however, their expectations are drastically different.   In this post I’ll share some very real insights from my wife and I, as we have been both work from home employees and home based business owners.

Freedom – The First Drawback of Online Jobs From Home

For a number of years, my wife worked for an internet based lighting company in their accounting department.  This was a great opportunity at the time as it allowed my wife to work from our home office while being available for our children.   As the company grew, the demands on my wife grew and in time she had a set schedule that required her to be at her desk to answer incoming phone calls.   This quickly led to a reduction in the freedom she had initially enjoyed, making it more difficult for her to get away for ball games, school programs and many of the other things that were so important to her.   She ultimately found herself in bondage to a time clock, even if that clock was in her own home.   As with most online jobs from home, someone else controlled her time.

Since making the shift to home based business owner, my wife has been able to regain control of her time.  She sets her own schedule according to the needs of the day.  No one is telling her when it is time to punch the proverbial clock.   She now focuses on home schooling our daughter and structures her work day around that priority.

Dependence – The Second Drawback Of Online Jobs From Home

My wife had been with the lighting company for six years, when the company decided that they wanted to consolidate all of their operations to Pennsylvania and North Carolina.   The problem for my wife was that we lived in Texas.   This decision cost her not only her job, but it revealed our dependence on someone else make things happen.   The second major drawback of online jobs from home stems from the fact that as an employee you are not the final decision maker.   The decisions of corporate managers can quickly put you our on the unemployment line.

As a business owner, the decisions that affect my future lie squarely upon my shoulders.   For some that may be a scary proposition, because there is no one else to blame; however, the ability to control your outcomes is of far greater value.   My father worked for a large bank for nearly 30 years.   When it came time for him to retire, he found himself with 40% less retirement than he had planned for, all because of a policy change during a corporate merger a decade earlier.   Many times before his death, earlier this year, he applauded my decision to remove myself from the dependence upon a corporation to provide for me.   As a business owner, I control the decisions and outcomes regarding my business and my future.

Limited Potential – The Third Drawback Of Online Jobs From Home

Probably the most significant drawback of “online jobs from home” is the limitation placed on the individual.  At the end of the day you are an employee and your worth is determined by management.   During the six years that my wife was with the company her pay only increased by $3.00 per hour.   Often times the explanation to the employees was simply that the ability to give raises was not in the budget (even though the company somehow found money to cover the lease on the owner’s new Lexus).  No matter how hard my wife or her co-workers worked, there would always be a place where they would “top out” for their particular job description.

In a home based business there is no limitation on your income being imposed by someone else.  If you develop your business strategically and work it with consistent passion and commitment, the potential is virtually unlimited.   If you take that a step further, as we have, and couple your business to the leveraged power of a network marketing business model.  The potential of what one person can accomplish is staggering.

Admittedly when weighing the choice between online jobs from home or having your own business there is a trade off.   Some will choose an exchange of their time for an hourly wage, because they fear being responsible for their own outcomes.   For those people, this course is probably the best.   The world will always need data entry, customer service call centers and airline reservation agents.

For the rest of us, there is too much that we hope to accomplish in life.  Too many people that need us to have freedom with our time and the ability to earn beyond a mere wage.  For that special breed of people…the entrepreneurs, the choice is clear.   A home based business will always win out over the myriad of online jobs from home that are available today.
