Online Jobs From Home Or Your Own Business – Which Is Better?

online jobs from home From Home Or Your Own Business – Which Is Better?

Maybe you are searching for from home, because you want to avoid the commute, spend more time with your kids or just simply hate sitting in a cubicle or office all day.   As more and more companies have turned to telecommuting as a viable work option, the desire of people to break out of the traditional work environment has increased significantly.

At the same time, many people have fled the corporate rat race to become home based entrepreneurs.  Their initial reasons for making the change are often very similar to those who actively seek out from home; however, their expectations are drastically different.   In this post I’ll share some very real insights from my wife and I, as we have been both work from home employees and owners.

Freedom – The First Drawback of Online Jobs From Home

For a number of years, my wife worked for an internet based lighting company in their accounting department.  This was a great opportunity at the time as it allowed my wife to work from our home office while being available for our children.   As the company grew, the demands on my wife grew and in time she had a set schedule that required her to be at her desk to answer incoming phone calls.   This quickly led to a reduction in the freedom she had initially enjoyed, making it more difficult for her to get away for ball games, school programs and many of the other things that were so important to her.   She ultimately found herself in bondage to a time clock, even if that clock was in her own home.   As with most online jobs from home, someone else controlled her time.

Since making the shift to home based business owner, my wife has been able to regain control of her time.  She sets her own schedule according to the needs of the day.  No one is telling her when it is time to punch the proverbial clock.   She now focuses on home schooling our daughter and structures her work day around that priority.

Dependence – The Second Drawback Of Online Jobs From Home

My wife had been with the lighting company for six years, when the company decided that they wanted to consolidate all of their operations to Pennsylvania and North Carolina.   The problem for my wife was that we lived in Texas.   This decision cost her not only her job, but it revealed our dependence on someone else make things happen.   The second major drawback of online jobs from home stems from the fact that as an employee you are not the final decision maker.   The decisions of corporate managers can quickly put you our on the unemployment line.

As a business owner, the decisions that affect my future lie squarely upon my shoulders.   For some that may be a scary proposition, because there is no one else to blame; however, the ability to control your outcomes is of far greater value.   My father worked for a large bank for nearly 30 years.   When it came time for him to retire, he found himself with 40% less retirement than he had planned for, all because of a policy change during a corporate merger a decade earlier.   Many times before his death, earlier this year, he applauded my decision to remove myself from the dependence upon a corporation to provide for me.   As a business owner, I control the decisions and outcomes regarding my business and my future.

Limited Potential – The Third Drawback Of Online Jobs From Home

Probably the most significant drawback of “online jobs from home” is the limitation placed on the individual.  At the end of the day you are an employee and your worth is determined by management.   During the six years that my wife was with the company her pay only increased by $3.00 per hour.   Often times the explanation to the employees was simply that the ability to give raises was not in the budget (even though the company somehow found money to cover the lease on the owner’s new Lexus).  No matter how hard my wife or her co-workers worked, there would always be a place where they would “top out” for their particular job description.

In a home based business there is no limitation on your income being imposed by someone else.  If you develop your business strategically and work it with consistent passion and commitment, the potential is virtually unlimited.   If you take that a step further, as we have, and couple your business to the leveraged power of a network marketing business model.  The potential of what one person can accomplish is staggering.

Admittedly when weighing the choice between online jobs from home or having your own business there is a trade off.   Some will choose an exchange of their time for an hourly wage, because they fear being responsible for their own outcomes.   For those people, this course is probably the best.   The world will always need data entry, call centers and airline reservation agents.

For the rest of us, there is too much that we hope to accomplish in life.  Too many people that need us to have freedom with our time and the ability to earn beyond a mere wage.  For that special breed of people…the entrepreneurs, the choice is clear.   A home based business will always win out over the myriad of online jobs from home that are available today.
