Do You Really Need To Learn SEO?
Do You Really Need To Learn SEO?
In the last few years it has almost seemed like a pre-requisite that to become a successful network marketer, you also needed to become an online marketing guru. Every course available tells you how to tweak a little more marketing horsepower out of your efforts. So in this tech savvy day and age, is it really necessary for you to become an expert in SEO?
If you are not sure what I’m talking about. SEO is the common name for search engine optimization. This is the process that it is utilized to make a website, blog post or other piece of content more favorable in the search engine rankings.
The World of Network Marketing Before SEO
It is important to step back from the hype for a moment and remember the history of our business. Men and women have been earning incomes through direct sales businesses for over 100 years. Amway was making millionaires before anyone owned a personal computer or the internet existed. We need to remember these facts to get in touch with the reality that this business model has worked for thousands of people long before technology entered the picture.
Network marketing has always been and will continue to be a business built on interpersonal relationships. It is a friend sharing their business, product or service with another friend or acquaintance that has built incomes over the years. The introduction of technology into the picture has not changed this basic fundamental truth. Our modern technology simply allows a network marketer to share their business, product or service with a larger group of people over a broader geographic range in a much more efficient manner.
Where Does SEO Fit In?
In the end, SEO is a tool that a network marketer can utilize to improve the quantity and quality of traffic to their website. Knowing how to optimize the site will provide greater opportunities for lead generation and interpersonal contact. When you talk to those who utilize optimization strategies with their business, you will find that most of them still are building their business through the means of interpersonal contact. The website traffic is merely a means of communicating to increased numbers of people on a daily basis.
So back to the original question: ”Do you really need to learn SEO?” If you intend to build a long term business online, then you invest the time to learn these skills. Let me stress, that this learning should not be done at the expense of your daily business building disciplines. You need to be talking to people about your business every day and learning these techniques as you go. In the long run you will have a stronger business, because you have not only learned how to drive traffic to your website, but more importantly you have learned to talk to people about your business.

Hey Carl,
In my opinion, learning about SEO is no longer something that a serious marketer can treat as optional or “good to know”. It’s entirely possible to spend years studying the subject, but learning the basics will get you 70% of the way and can be knocked out in a weekend.
I get 90+% of my traffic through the search engines, so I can say you’re right on with this one, Carl!
On a related note, I’ve been noticing that your traffic has been increasing over the past few months as well, so anyone reading this should definitely pay attention.
Thanks, Carl!

Brian,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. SEO has certainly become one of the primary tools I implement in my business and it is responsible for much of the activity I’m able to produce.
That being said, there is still the issue of helping team members reproduce who are not up to speed on these types of strategies. I personally have tried to adopt a dual prong approach, by teaching the principles of connecting offline, while constantly supplying new skill sets to keep pace with the future direction of our industry.
Hey Carl, Good information. I think SEO is no longer optional as well.
I agree with your dual approach. I was just telling someone today that MLM lead generation works well but interesting thing is that the more you write about your MLM business the easier it is to talk to people in person.
It is a major confidence booster for new people and people that are kind of stagnant in your group. And of course they generate leads along the way and sponsor some people which gets everyone excited and then the momentum can get going again in those groups.
Thanks for the post!

Keith,
I appreciate your feedback on the subject. Like most everything else, people have to move with the current of how people live, work and communicate in our world.
The conversations will still take place, but the catalyst for those conversations will increasingly come from online interaction.
Good job on this post! Thanks for sharing!
