Are You Fishing In The Wrong Pond?

Are You Fishing In The Wrong Pond?

It’s a beautiful day, the sky is blue and the sun is shining brightly.   You decide there is no better time than the present to go fishing.   You decide that you would like to catch some Largemouth Bass, so you begin your preparations.

…You’ve got your spinning reel and you favorite graphite rod

…You check your tackle box

…You pack a lunch box and cooler

After loading everything, you head to the bait store and pick up a bucket minnows.   From there you head to a nearby farm pond.

For the next 8 hours you cast and sit, cast and sit….no bites, no nibbles and no

So you decide that it must be the bait that is the problem.   You put the minnows aside and switch over to spinner bait.   For the next 2 hours, you cast and retrieve, cast and retrieve, cast and retrieve.   The results; however, do not change…no bits, no nibbles and no

As you are leaving, you run into the land owner.   He asks how you’re fishing went and you begin to explain that the fish just weren’t biting.   He begins to ask about the bait you were using.  As you describe your bait and lures, the land owner begins laughing hysterically….

He goes on to explain that the reason you didn’t catch any fish is because you were trying to fish for bass in a catfish pond…

So what does this have to do with your marketing?

Many marketers fall into the trap of marketing their hearts out, but marketing to the wrong audience.

Some of the most common mistakes include targeting content towards highly generic keywords.  While words like “mlm” and “network marketing” receive a high level of traffic each month, they are a poor use of the marketer’s time for a couple of reasons.

  1. First of all these are highly competitive keywords that will be difficult to consistently rank for
  2. These terms are generic in nature and will draw an audience looking for generic
  3. Generic seekers are typically not serious buyers

It is important that you identify who your target buyers are.   What is the they are looking for?  What questions need to be answered to trigger their buying response?  This free webinar gives some great pointers on creating content around the questions prospective buyers are asking.

Craft your content around the answers to these questions and include a strong call to action that is relevant to their objectives.
