The importance of having a "sales funnel"

One of the most important concepts that any marketer needs to understand is the concept of developing a sales funnel. I first learned this concept when I started out in sales during high school. The concept of the sales funnel is simple.
A marketer needs to continually be adding people to the top of the funnel. This is done through your relationship building efforts in the form of advertising, giveaways, face to face contact, etc... Out of those "touches" some will become "window shoppers" by clicking on a link, visiting a site, etc.... Out of those individuals some will become contacts through opt-in, membership or some other means that gives you permission to initiate further contact. Out of those individuals some will become buyers of the products and services that you market. Finally of those individuals some will become referrers through joining your downline or entering into your business with you.
The key to the funnel is that you must always be adding people to the top. If no one is being added at the top end of the funnel, there will be no sales at the bottom end of the funnel. This is also the place that tracking becomes so critical. Through tracking you will know which components of your marketing efforts are most effectively moving prospects through each level of your funnel.
